Procedure
Enhance the size and shape of your breast by using artificial implants.
An incision can be made either underneath the breast just above
the crease, or around the lower edge of the areola. The implant
is usually placed in a pocket directly underneath the pectoral muscle,
which is located between the breast tissue and chest wall. Under
certain circumstances it may be placed behind the breast tissue.
Length of Procedure
The procedure usually last 2 to 3 hours depending on the extent
of the surgery.
Type of Anesthesia
This procedure can be done under local or general anesthesia, done
on an outpatient basis.
Side Effects
There will be temporary soreness, swelling, change in nipple sensation,
bruising for the first few weeks in some cases longer. Your breasts
are sensitive to stimulation for the first few weeks after surgery.
Risks
Fortunately, significant complications from this procedure are infrequent,
and thousands of people undergo this procedure with no complications.
However, anyone that is considering this procedure should be aware
of the benefits and risks. The potential complications of this surgery
are best discussed on a personal basis with your surgeon. Though
some complications that may be discussed are infection, asymmetry,
tightening and hardening of scar tissue around the implant (capsular
contracture) or rupture of implant.
Recovery
Usually within a few days you are able to return back to work, physical
contact with breasts can resume after 3 to 4 weeks. Fading of scars
usually months to a year.
