Procedure
The primary cause of skin cancer is ultra violet radiation most
often from the sun, though it can also be caused by artificial sources,
such as sunlamps, and tanning booths. Removing all or part of the
growth and examining it under a microscope usually diagnoses skin
cancer. It can be treated by a number of different methods, though
it depends on the type of cancer it is, it’s stage of growth, and
it’s location on your body. Most skin cancers are removed surgically
either by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist. If the cancer is small
in size it can be removed quickly in an outpatient facility. The
procedure may be a simple excision, which usually leaves a thin
non-visible scar. In this procedure the cancer is scraped out with
a special instrument and the area is treated with an electric current
to control bleeding and kill any remaining cancer cells. If the
cancer is large, or if it has spread to the lymph glands or elsewhere
in the body, major more complex surgery may be required. Your surgeon
during your initial evaluation will choose the best technique for
you.
